Ninilchik is located on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, 45 miles north of Homer, 135 miles from Seward and 188 miles from Anchorage on the Sterling Highway.

The Kenai Peninsula Fair is held here the third weekend in August and features the Peninsula Rodeo, a parade, horse show, livestock competition and exhibits. The king salmon derby is held from May to June 15 and the halibut derby runs from Father's Day through Labor Day. This is an area known for its saltwater king salmon fishing and record halibut fishing. Fishing charters with combination king salmon and halibut charters available.

The highway community of Ninilchik has services including accommodations, dining, gas, grocery stores, and fishing charters.
